Esther J. Kim, Sandra Vermeulen, Francisco J. Li, David W. Newell

Abstract

Introduction: Cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) have a complex natural history and the optimal treatment modality is still being elucidated. Several treatment modalities have been studied, including surgical excision, embolization, and radiation. This article will review the current definition, pathophysiology, natural history, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment strategies.
Methods: A review of the medical literature was done in various databases to review the current radiotherapy practices in the treatment of AVMs.
Conclusions: Stereotactic radiosurgery is a safe and effective treatment option for AVM with good obliteration rates and low morbidity or mortality.
